In the aftermath of Celtic’s crucial 2-1 win over Hibernian at Easter Road, Chris Sutton has come out in strong defence of the penalty decisions that played a pivotal role in securing the victory for the Hoops.

The match, which marked Brendan Rodgers’ first win at Easter Road across his tenures as Celtic manager, has sparked widespread debate, particularly among Rangers supporters, regarding the legitimacy of the penalties awarded to Celtic.
Celtic’s performance during the match was not without its critics, as the team struggled with creativity and decision-making. However, the game’s defining moments came from two penalties, both converted by January signing Adam Idah, which propelled Celtic to a significant three points in the title race.
The decision to award these penalties has been a point of contention, particularly among Rangers fans, colloquially known as “bears.”
Referee Nick Walsh’s decisions have come under scrutiny, with some arguing that the penalties were unjustified. However, Chris Sutton, known for his forthright opinions, took to social media to affirm the correctness of Walsh’s calls. Sutton stated, “How are people (mostly bears) even arguing about the award of this. Nick Walsh was correct on both penalties tonight…”

Sutton’s endorsement of the penalty decisions adds an authoritative voice to the debate, emphasising the view that the referee’s judgments were valid. This comes amid attempts by some, including former Rangers player Kris Boyd, to question the legitimacy of the penalties. Boyd’s comments were met with scepticism, with James McFadden accusing Boyd of “clutching at straws”, after he shared his belief that Walsh was wrong in his penalty decisions, including the one to deny Hibs.
Nick Montgomery also believes that the two penalty decisions were incorrect
