Brendan Rodgers’ Lack of Surprise at Saturday Result

Brendan Rodgers has admitted he wasn’t surprised by Celtic’s 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock on Saturday, citing it as similar to the Hoops’ 2-1 loss to Derek McInness’ side in December.

Kyogo Furuhashi gave the champions a first-half lead at the weekend but their lead remained a slender one going into the closing stages. Particularly in recent times, this has proved a risky strategy for The Bhoys.

Inevitably, young David Watson got the late leveller that caused boos to ring around Parkhead when the full-time whistle sounded.

There was an atmosphere of toxicity post-match against Killie that has been inherent any time the Celts have failed to take all three points this season.

Along with a lot of the home fans, manager Brendan Rodgers could see the result coming. Speaking after the game, he said (Football Scotland): “We’ve had enough mishaps throughout the season so I’m not surprised if I’m honest.

“It was the same at Kilmarnock when we were ahead in the game, got pegged back and ended up losing.

“There’s been others where we haven’t been able to produce a level of performance. So I can’t say I’m surprised – that’s my honest answer.”

Throughout the season, there has been a sense of inevitability surrounding Celtic’s games, particularly when they are only up by one, that they will cease to drop points somehow. That was once more the case on Saturday but between now and the end of the season, few more slip-ups can be afforded.
