Despite his storied history with Celtic, where he achieved the remarkable feat of winning a treble both as a player and a manager, Lennon’s journey post-Celtic has seen him struggle for jobs.

Lennon’s managerial capabilities came under scrutiny during what has been termed the disastrous COVID season, where Celtic’s pursuit of an unprecedented tenth consecutive league title faltered under his guidance.

The pursuit of a new challenge led Lennon to express his interest in the Republic of Ireland national team’s managerial position, a role for which he was considered a strong contender. However, he revealed that the Irish FA opted for a candidate with international managerial experience, leading Lennon to miss out on the appointment. This decision, as shared by Lennon with The Sun, left him feeling disappointed, given the positive feedback he received during the selection process.

He said: “I was close to the Ireland job and I was disappointed to miss out on it.

“The feedback was positive but they said they wanted to go with someone who had  international experience.”
